1. Look at Your Child’s Toys

Before buying new party decorations, take a look at your child’s favorite toys! For my daughter Maddie’s Gabby’s Dollhouse birthday party, I used her actual dollhouse as a decoration.

I printed photos of Maddie at different ages on cardstock, folded and taped the bottoms so they would stand, and placed them throughout the dollhouse. I displayed it at the entrance with a little “Maddie’s Dollhouse” sign.

It was such a cute, personal decoration—and it cost almost nothing since we already owned the dollhouse. Sometimes the best birthday party decorations are things you already have at home!

2. Use Your Playground

If you have a backyard playground, don’t overlook it when decorating for a birthday party! You can easily dress it up to match your theme with a sign, balloons, or a few simple decorations.

For my son Vance’s Davy Crockett birthday party, we turned our playground into Fort Vance to fit our “King of the Wild Frontier” theme. We added a simple sign and made the playground part of the party décor.

It was the perfect addition because it not only fit the theme, but gave the kids something fun to do. They could play, burn off some energy, and enjoy the playground while still feeling like it was part of the party!

3. Use Furniture You Already Own

Don’t overlook the furniture you already have when decorating for a birthday party! A chair, bench, stool, or small table can easily become part of your party décor.

For my daughter Maddie’s Glinda-inspired birthday party, we used a beautiful pink velvet chair that had been handed down from her auntie. The pink color was perfect for the Glinda-inspired décor, so we placed it at the main entrance with the balloon arch and party sign.

The chair quickly became Maddie’s special spot throughout the party. She sat there while we sang “Happy Birthday,” hung out with Glinda, and opened her presents. It created a little birthday throne that was both practical and a fun part of the decorations!

4. Use Shelves and Storage

Look around your house for shelves, carts, baskets, or other storage pieces that could double as party displays. They can be an easy way to add height and organize decorations or activities.

For my daughter’s Lisa Frank Animal Rescue birthday party, we created an “Adopt an Animal” station with little TY Beanie Babies for the kids to choose from. I used a shelf my husband had originally built for our bathroom to display all of the animals.

It was the perfect way to break up the space and make the animals easy for the kids to see and choose from. We didn’t have to buy or build anything new—just repurposed something we already owned!

5. Repurpose Firewood for a Cupcake Display

Have some leftover firewood? You can turn it into a rustic birthday cupcake display! For my husband’s rustic 40th birthday party, we used firewood we already had and cut small logs to create platforms for displaying cupcakes.

It was completely free since we were able to use wood we already had, and it fit the rustic theme perfectly.

We also used the wood cutouts for centerpieces for our outdoor dinner

Safety note: If you choose to cut or prepare wood for a project like this, use appropriate safety precautions and equipment, or ask someone experienced to do it for you. If you’d rather skip the DIY cutting, you can also purchase a similar pre-made log cupcake display.

6. Use Photos

There’s no better way to personalize a birthday party than with photos! Instead of buying more decorations, display meaningful photos of the birthday person throughout the party.

For my mother-in-law’s 70th birthday, we created a beautiful photo display featuring her throughout the years. We used photos and frames to create a display that was both decorative and incredibly personal.

I also used photos for my husband’s 40th birthday by creating personalized photo cupcake toppers featuring him. It was such a simple way to turn something as ordinary as a cupcake into a fun, personalized party decoration.

7. Get Your Guests Involved in the Decor

One of the easiest ways to add to your party décor is to have your guests dress to the theme! It fills the party with your chosen colors without you having to buy more decorations.

For my dad’s 70th birthday, we had an Oregon Ducks-inspired tailgate party called Kelly’s Tailgate. We asked guests to wear green and yellow or their favorite Oregon Ducks gear, and it made such a fun difference! With everyone dressed in the party colors, the entire celebration felt even more like a real tailgate.

It’s an easy, inexpensive way to make your guests part of the theme—and people usually have fun getting dressed up for a party!

8. Turn Party Favors Into Decor

Want to have party favors at your birthday party? Make them part of the décor, too! Displaying your favors creatively can add to your theme while making them easy for guests to find.

For my son Vance’s Davy Crockett “King of the Wild Frontier” birthday party, we displayed little woodland animals wearing party hats on a shelf near the entrance. We added a cute sign that said, “After cake, come adopt your frontier friend!” The display looked like part of the party décor while also serving as the kids’ party favor station.

We also made little “campfire bags” from brown paper bags with yellow and orange tissue paper peeking out of the top. They looked like tiny campfires and fit perfectly with our Wild Frontier theme.

9. Use Your Kids’ Stuffed Animals as Decor

If your child has a favorite stuffed animal—or an entire collection of them—put them to work as birthday party decorations! It’s an easy way to incorporate something your child already loves into the celebration.

You can even add little party hats to stuffed animals, dolls, or other toys. Amazon has lots of tiny party hats that can fit different toys and stuffed animals, making it easy to create a fun little display.

10. Repurpose Old Toys as Statement Decor

Have an old pool toy, inflatable, or oversized toy sitting around? Instead of letting it collect dust, turn it into a statement piece for your next birthday party!

For my daughter’s Under-the-Sea/Little Mermaid birthday party, we used an old whale pool toy we already had and hung it from the ceiling with fishing line. We transformed our living room into an underwater world by adding hanging jellyfish, bubbles, and other ocean-inspired decorations.

We actually loved this theme so much that we did it twice! 🧜‍♀️💜 The under-the-sea/Little Mermaid theme was just too much fun to do only once!

The giant whale became one of the most memorable parts of the party and helped create an immersive experience that made guests feel like they were actually under the sea. It was a fun way to use something we already owned while making a big visual impact!
