When I started planning my daughter’s 7th birthday, there was one thing she made crystal clear—she wanted a Lisa Frank birthday party.
Emily has always loved animals. She dreams of becoming a veterinarian someday, and ever since she was a toddler, she’s had such a gentle heart for every animal she meets. As we started planning her party, I wanted to combine her love of colorful Lisa Frank decorations with her biggest passion: animals.
That’s how Emily’s Animal Rescue was born.
Instead of traditional party favors, each child adopted a TY Beanie Baby, completed an adoption certificate, decorated a personalized collar, and took their new furry friend home in a pet carrier. It quickly became the highlight of the entire party!

How Emily’s Animal Rescue Worked
One of my biggest goals was to make the experience feel like the kids were actually visiting an animal rescue.
Rather than handing out party favors at the end of the party, every child became part of the experience by adopting their very own TY Beanie Baby to take home.
Here’s how it worked:
Step 1: Choose a Stuffed Animal
The kids browsed shelves full of TY Beanie Babies until they found the perfect new best friend to adopt.
Step 2: Complete an Adoption Certificate
Each child filled out an adoption certificate with their pet’s name, their own name, and the adoption date to make everything feel official.
Step 3: Visit the Pet Boutique
After adopting their new friend, everyone headed to the Pet Boutique to decorate a personalized collar and choose a holographic pet carrier.
Step 4: Take Your New Best Friend Home
The kids proudly carried their new pets home in their custom carriers, making the party favor part of the experience instead of something handed out at the end.
The Hand-Painted Birthday Sign
As someone with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts, I love creating custom hand-painted signs for my kids’ birthday parties. Emily’s Animal Rescue sign became the centerpiece of the entire party!
If making a large sign feels intimidating, here’s one of my favorite art tips: use a projector. Simply project your design onto kraft paper or poster board, trace it, and then paint over the outlines. It’s an easy way to create a professional-looking sign, even if you don’t consider yourself an artist.
If painting isn’t your thing, paint markers are another beginner-friendly option that work beautifully for party decorations.

Decorating the Pet Carriers
The pet carriers ended up being one of my favorite DIY projects because my own kids helped make them!
I ordered iridescent pet carriers and let my kids decorate each one with colorful Lisa Frank stickers. Every carrier looked a little different, which made each adoption feel even more special.
I also love that the carriers doubled as both a party favor and a fun way for each child to bring their new pet home.
Party Tip: If you want to add another fun activity, let the kids decorate their own pet carriers! Set out sticker sheets (Lisa Frank or any animal-themed stickers would be adorable), markers, and other embellishments so each child can personalize their carrier before taking their new pet home. It’s an easy craft that doubles as a memorable party favor.

DIY Pet Collars
To make the adoption experience even more special, each child decorated a personalized collar for their new pet. We used colorful pony beads, pipe cleaners, and small wooden name tags so every stuffed animal had its own custom collar.
One thing I learned while putting everything together is that attaching the tiny metal key rings to the wooden tags took much longer than I expected. Instead, we simply threaded the wooden tag onto the center of a pipe cleaner and twisted the pipe cleaner around it, keeping the tag facing the direction we wanted. Then the kids just added pony beads to both sides and wrapped the finished collar around their stuffed animal’s neck.
This ended up being the perfect solution! It made the craft simple enough for our younger guests (most were between 5 and 7 years old) and kept the line moving quickly.
Party Tip: I highly recommend assembling the pipe cleaners and wooden tags before the party begins. Then, all the kids have to do is slide on the beads and twist the collar around their new pet. If you’re hosting a larger party, having a few extra adults help during craft time also makes a huge difference. Once the Pet Boutique opened, everyone was excited to get started, and having extra hands kept everything running smoothly.

Personalized Adoption Certificates
To make every adoption feel official, I designed personalized adoption certificates for each guest to complete after choosing their stuffed animal.
The kids loved naming their pets, writing down the adoption date, and taking home a keepsake from the party.

Building the Animal Rescue
One of the questions I get asked most is where I found all of the stuffed animals.
Instead of buying them all at once, I collected TY Beanie Babies over several weeks. Every time I went grocery shopping, I’d pick up five or six animals from Safeway or Yoke’s Fresh Market.
Most of them cost between $5.99 and $7.99, which was actually more affordable than ordering many of them online. By shopping a little at a time, I was able to build a huge variety of animals without feeling overwhelmed.
Displaying them on wooden shelves also made the rescue feel like a real adoption center instead of just a table full of stuffed animals.
My Best Tip for Choosing Stuffed Animals
One thing I intentionally did was purchase 4–6 of the same TY Beanie Baby instead of buying only one of each animal. This gave the kids plenty of variety while also preventing disappointment if multiple children fell in love with the same puppy, panda, or unicorn.
Having a few of each animal meant everyone could choose a favorite without worrying about someone else getting the only one. It kept the adoption process fun, stress-free, and prevented kids from arguing over their new furry friends.

How to Keep a Stuffed Animal Adoption Party Organized
One of the best decisions we made was creating a simple system to keep Emily’s Animal Rescue organized. With so many excited kids, having a plan helped everything run smoothly and made the experience more enjoyable for everyone.
We transformed my daughter’s bedroom into the Pet Boutique, where the kids decorated their pet collars and completed the adoption process. To keep things from becoming too chaotic, we only allowed about five children into the room at a time. While one group was inside crafting, the next group waited after choosing their stuffed animal.
Having a few extra adults was incredibly helpful! We had one mom helping the kids inside the Pet Boutique while another helped manage the line outside. This gave each child enough space to enjoy the activity without feeling rushed, and it kept the line moving smoothly.
Another detail that made a huge difference was using signs throughout the party. At the Animal Rescue, we displayed a sign that read:
“Emily’s Animal Rescue opens at 5:30 PM. Our rescued animals are resting before they meet their forever families. Thank you for waiting.”
This built excitement throughout the party and helped prevent little hands from adopting their new pets before it was officially time! We also placed a sign on the Pet Boutique door so guests knew exactly where to go after choosing their stuffed animal.
If you’re planning your own stuffed animal adoption party, I highly recommend creating a simple flow for the activity. A few signs, a designated craft area, and a couple of extra adults helped keep everything organized while allowing each child to enjoy the experience at their own pace.

Final Thoughts
Emily’s Animal Rescue was, without a doubt, the highlight of my daughter’s 7th birthday party. The kids absolutely loved choosing their new pets, decorating personalized collars, and proudly carrying them around for the rest of the party. It was so much fun watching each child carefully pick out the perfect stuffed animal and make it their own.
The parents loved the idea just as much as the kids did. Instead of sending everyone home with a bag full of small party favors that often get forgotten, each child left with a special experience and a cuddly new friend to take home. It felt like such a meaningful way for Emily to say, “Thank you for celebrating with me.”
One of my favorite moments was seeing the kids continue playing with their new pets long after the adoption station was over. They introduced their animals to each other, carried them around the party, and truly treated them like their new little companions.
I hope those stuffed animals become more than just party favors. My hope is that years from now, they’ll still be tucked away on a bedroom shelf or snuggled at bedtime, reminding each child of the day they visited Emily’s Animal Rescue and adopted their very own forever friend.
