I’ve now thrown an “Under the Sea Birthday Party” twice—and even though I used a lot of the same decorations, they turned out completely different in each space.
This first party was in our previous home, a more typical-sized layout, and everything felt so full, colorful, and immersive—like you walked into an underwater world.
If you’re planning a party at your home and want it to feel magical and pulled together, I’m sharing exactly how I made this one come to life.
The second time I did this theme was at my mom’s house out in the country, with a much bigger, open space—and the setup ended up looking completely different. I’ll link that party below so you can see how the same ideas translate in a larger home.
👉 See how this same theme looked in a large, open home in my blog post: Under the Sea Little Mermaid Birthday Party I threw for My Daughter’s 3rd Birthday
Both parties felt so immersive and magical in their own way — they just had a completely different look and atmosphere. From whimsical pastel details to ocean-inspired decor, each celebration felt unique, special, and full of its own personality. ✨
🐠 MY GOAL: CREATE AN IMMERSIVE “UNDER THE SEA” EXPERIENCE
For this party, I didn’t just want ocean-themed decorations—I wanted it to feel like you were actually walking under the sea when you stepped into our home.
I focused on using the ceiling, filling the space, and layering decorations so everything felt full and immersive. I didn’t want empty corners—I wanted every part of the room to feel like it was part of the theme.
🐋 HOW I CREATED THE “UNDERWATER” EFFECT
Hanging Sea Creatures (My Favorite Part)
The biggest thing that brought this theme to life was using the ceiling.
I hung a large orca whale pool float from the ceiling using fishing line, along with jellyfish decorations hanging down at different heights. I also added balloons so everything felt like it was floating.

This made the entire space feel like you were underwater—it was probably the most impactful part of the whole setup.
🎈 Balloon Garland + Filling the Space
I used a balloon garland across the top of the cabinets and added balloons throughout the space to really fill everything in.
In a regular home, using vertical space (like above cabinets or higher walls) makes such a big difference. It helps everything feel more decorated without needing a ton of extra items.

🌊 Ocean-Inspired Table Setup
For the food and dessert tables, I kept things simple but cohesive.
I used blue tablecloths to mimic water, which tied everything together and helped carry the theme throughout the space. Even small details like that make a big difference in how everything feels overall.

💡 Budget-Friendly Cake Tip (That Still Looks Amazing)
If you’re trying to keep things budget-friendly, this is one of my favorite party hacks—use a simple box cake or cupcakes and dress them up with themed toys or toppers. It makes everything feel custom without the extra cost.

And honestly, this is something I’ve gotten better at over time. For my daughter’s more recent birthday party, I made cupcakes at home using a basic box mix—but used a piping kit and decorating tips to frost them, and they ended up looking like they were from a bakery.

It’s such an easy way to elevate a simple dessert without spending a ton, and now it’s something I’ll probably keep doing for future parties.
Backyard Water Slide & Bounce House Fun
One of the biggest hits of the party was the backyard water slide bounce house we set up for the kids. Since the party was during warmer weather, it ended up being the perfect way to keep everyone entertained while also tying into the whole under-the-sea vibe.
We used a toddler-sized inflatable bounce house with a small water slide feature, and honestly, it was worth every penny for the amount of fun the kids had. Between the splash zone, bouncing, and sliding, it kept the little ones busy for hours and gave the adults a chance to actually relax and visit too.
I loved that it added to the immersive “ocean” feel of the party without needing a ton of extra activities or complicated planning. Sometimes the simplest things end up being the biggest memories.
We also set up a small inflatable kiddie pool for the babies and younger toddlers, which ended up working out perfectly. While the older kids played on the water slide bounce house, the little ones had their own safe spot to splash and play.

It was such a simple addition, but it helped make the party feel more inclusive for all ages and kept everyone happy and entertained. Plus, it fit the whole under-the-sea theme perfectly and added even more of that fun summer atmosphere to the backyard setup.
If you’re planning an under-the-sea or summer birthday party, I definitely recommend adding some type of water activity — especially for younger kids. It made the whole party feel playful, energetic, and unforgettable.
🏡 Playhouse Fun for the Little Kids
Another thing the kids absolutely loved was this little backyard playhouse. We dressed it up with leftover balloons from the party, which made it feel extra fun and tied it into the whole under-the-sea setup.
It ended up being one of those simple additions that kept the younger kids entertained for so long. They loved pretending, playing house, and running back and forth between the playhouse and the water activities.
I also loved that it made the backyard feel even more decorated and festive without needing a ton of extra setup.
Our exact one is no longer available, but this one is very similar.

Everything we used for the kids’ activities:
- Similar outdoor kids playhouse
- Our exact bounce house is no longer available, but this one is super similar and gives the same fun backyard party feel for little kids: Similar outdoor water bounce house
🏡 WHY THIS WORKED SO WELL IN A REGULAR HOME
One thing I loved about doing this party in our home was how full everything felt. Because the space wasn’t huge, the decorations filled it easily and created that immersive feeling without needing a ton of extra decor.
Some of the biggest advantages of decorating a more typical-sized home:
- It’s easier to make the space feel full
- Decorations naturally overlap and feel cohesive
- You don’t need as many items to make a big impact
Honestly, this setup felt so magical because everything was close together—it really helped create that “under the sea” environment.
I later recreated this same theme at my mom’s house out in the country, which has a much larger, open layout—and it turned out completely different. If you’re decorating a bigger space, you can see that setup here: Under the Sea Little Mermaid Birthday Party I threw for My Daughter’s 3rd Birthday
Small Home vs. Large Space: What I Noticed”
- smaller space = easier to make it feel full
- bigger space = needed more focal points (and more decorations to fill the space)
- same decor, totally different impact
After throwing this same theme twice in two completely different homes, I learned a lot about what worked better in small spaces vs larger open layouts. I’ll be sharing a full comparison post soon.
After throwing this under-the-sea theme twice for both of my daughters’ third birthdays, I can honestly say it ended up being one of my favorite party themes we’ve ever done. Even though I reused many of the same decorations, both parties turned out completely different in the best way — and each one felt magical, immersive, and full of personality.
What I loved most about this theme was how fun it was for everyone. The kids loved all of the playful underwater details, the balloons, and the water activities, while the adults genuinely enjoyed the atmosphere too. It felt like stepping into a completely different world for the day.
This party also reminded me that you don’t need a perfect Pinterest house or an unlimited budget to create something memorable. A few creative details, layered decorations, and a cohesive color palette can completely transform a regular home into something that feels really special.
And honestly, it’s been so fun comparing these two parties side-by-side and seeing how differently the same decorations came to life in each space. Stay tuned — I’ll be sharing a full comparison post soon with what worked best, what I’d repeat, and what I’d do differently after throwing the same birthday theme twice.
