There’s something magical about picking out your own Christmas tree. Instead of grabbing one from a parking lot or bringing an artificial tree down from the attic, you get to bundle up, head out to a Christmas tree farm, and search for the perfect tree with your family.
For me, part of the fun is the experience itself. You get to wander through rows of evergreens, walk through the woods, and take your time finding a tree that feels just right. It’s a chance to slow down during an otherwise busy holiday season and make memories together.

But finding the perfect tree takes a little more than spotting the tallest evergreen and declaring it the winner!
From measuring your space before you leave home to checking the tree’s shape and freshness, here are my tips for choosing the perfect Christmas tree at a cut-your-own Christmas tree farm.
1. Measure Your Space Before You Leave Home
This might be the most important tip on the entire list: measure your living room before heading to the Christmas tree farm!
Christmas trees have a funny way of looking much smaller when you’re standing outside among dozens of other trees. It’s surprisingly easy to find a beautiful evergreen, convince yourself it will look perfect in your home, and then discover that it’s much too big once you get it inside.
When you’re surrounded by trees in an open field or among the woods, it’s difficult to judge their true height and width. A tree that looks manageable outdoors can quickly overwhelm your living room.

Remember when we picked out a Christmas tree that looked totally reasonable at the tree farm? 🤣🎄 Yeah… turns out it was MUCH wider than we anticipated! We could barely fit this thing in our living room. Let this be your reminder to measure before you go tree hunting, because those trees look a whole lot smaller out in the woods! 😂
Before you leave home, measure your ceiling height and decide on the maximum height your tree can be. Remember to account for the tree stand and any topper you plan to use.
You’ll also want to consider the width of your space. A tall, full tree might look gorgeous, but it can make a smaller living room feel cramped or block a walkway.
I recommend bringing a tape measure with you to the farm. That way, you can check the approximate height and width before committing to a tree.
A few minutes of preparation can save you from bringing home a Christmas tree that’s far too big for your space!

After our oversized Christmas tree adventure, we got a much better fit at our new home! 😂🎄 Having the extra ceiling height made such a difference, and we finally had room for a beautiful tree without it completely taking over the living room. Proof that measuring your space before heading to the tree farm is ALWAYS a good idea! 🤣
2. Make a Day of It and Enjoy the Experience
One of my favorite reasons to visit a cut-your-own Christmas tree farm is that it turns picking out a tree into an experience rather than just another holiday errand.
Instead of stopping at a parking lot, choosing a tree, and loading it into the car, you get to spend time outside with your family. Depending on the farm, you might wander through rows of evergreens or hike along paths while searching for the perfect tree.

There’s something special about letting the kids help choose which tree comes home with you. Everyone can have an opinion, explore the farm, and enjoy the excitement of finding the one.
You could even make a tradition of stopping for hot chocolate afterward or taking a family photo with the tree before loading it up.

These are the little experiences that can become some of your favorite Christmas memories. The tree itself is wonderful, but the time spent finding it together is part of what makes the season special.

If you’re planning a visit with young children, check the farm’s website before heading out. Some farms offer wagon rides, hot drinks, or other holiday activities, while others focus primarily on tree cutting. Check whether you need to bring your own saw, too.
A Christmas Tree Farm Tradition That’s Extra Special to Us
Fun fact: My husband and I actually got married at a Christmas tree farm! Every year, we return to the place where we said “I do” to cut down our Christmas tree with our kids.
What started as our wedding day has become a tradition we get to share with our children. I love that we’re returning to a place that already holds so many special memories and creating new ones as a family.

It’s one of the reasons I love the experience of choosing a real Christmas tree. Yes, we get to bring home a beautiful tree, but we also get to spend time together, revisit a meaningful place, and continue a tradition that will hopefully become a favorite part of Christmas for our kids, too.

To me, those are the moments that make the holidays so special.

3. Choose a Tree That Fits Your Home
Once you arrive at the farm, it’s tempting to focus on finding the fullest, tallest, most beautiful tree in sight. Before you fall in love with one, remember the measurements you took at home!
Look at the tree from several angles. Walk around it and consider how it will look in your living room, especially if one side will face a wall.
Think about the following:
- Height: Will it fit beneath your ceiling with enough room for the stand and topper?
- Width: Will the branches extend too far into your living space?
- Shape: Do you prefer a full, traditional Christmas tree or something a little slimmer?
- Symmetry: Does the tree have a shape you like, or are there gaps that will be difficult to work around?
Remember that no tree is perfectly symmetrical. Sometimes a slightly uneven tree can be beautiful once it’s decorated and positioned in the right spot.
If you have young children, you may also want to think about where the tree will sit in relation to furniture, walkways, and play areas.
The perfect tree isn’t necessarily the biggest one on the farm. It’s the one that works best in your home.
4. Look for a Fresh, Healthy Tree
One of the biggest advantages of cutting your own Christmas tree is knowing when it was harvested.
Real Christmas trees can be sold through tree farms, roadside lots, garden centers, and other retailers. Trees sold at retail lots may have been cut days or weeks earlier and stored before being sold. Some are kept in excellent condition, while others may have dried out more than you’d want.

When you cut your own tree at a farm, you have a clearer idea of when it was harvested. That can give you greater confidence that you’re starting with a fresh tree, although proper care after cutting is still important.
Here are a few things to look for when choosing your tree:
- Flexible needles: Needles should generally feel flexible rather than brittle.
- Healthy color: Look for a tree with a healthy appearance for its variety.
- Minimal excessive shedding: A few older interior needles may fall naturally, but a tree that sheds heavily when handled may be drying out.
- Healthy branches: Avoid trees with excessively dry or brittle branches.
You can also ask the farm when trees are harvested and whether the trees are freshly cut or have been sitting for a while.
Keep in mind that a fresh-cut tree still needs proper care. Once you get home, make a fresh cut across the bottom of the trunk if needed and place the tree in a sturdy stand with water as soon as possible. Check the water reservoir daily and keep it filled.
A fresh tree that’s properly cared for is more likely to retain its needles and remain attractive throughout the Christmas season.
5. Choose the Right Christmas Tree Variety
Depending on where you live and which trees your local farm grows, you may have several varieties to choose from.
Different Christmas trees have different scents, branch strengths, needle textures, and shapes. Here are a few popular options you might encounter.
Fraser Fir
Fraser firs are popular for their good needle retention, sturdy branches, and classic Christmas tree shape. They’re a great option for families who want a traditional tree that can hold many common ornaments.
Noble Fir
Noble firs are known for their sturdy branches and distinctive blue-green needles. Their layered branches can be especially attractive if you enjoy decorating with larger ornaments.
Douglas Fir
Douglas firs have soft needles and a full, classic silhouette. They’re also known for their pleasant evergreen fragrance, making them appealing to families who love that traditional Christmas tree smell.
Balsam Fir
Balsam firs are known for their traditional evergreen scent and soft, flat needles. They can be a lovely choice if fragrance is high on your Christmas tree wish list.
Not every farm carries every variety, so ask what’s available when you arrive.
If you’re unsure which tree to choose, don’t be afraid to ask the farm staff for recommendations. They can often help you find a variety that suits your space and decorating style.
6. Think About How You’ll Decorate Your Tree
Before you settle on a tree, think about the decorations you’ll be using.
If you love large ornaments, you’ll want branches sturdy enough to support their weight. If you prefer ribbon, garland, or oversized bows, look for a tree with a shape that allows those decorations to stand out.

A fuller tree offers plenty of space for ornaments, while a more open tree can create a natural look with room between the branches.
If you have children, consider how your family uses the tree, too. Shatter-resistant ornaments can be a practical choice for lower branches, especially when little hands are eager to help decorate.
You don’t need to choose the most perfectly shaped tree to create something beautiful. Once you add your favorite ornaments, lights, and family keepsakes, even a slightly imperfect tree can become the centerpiece of your holiday home.
7. Find Out What the Christmas Tree Farm Provides
Before you head out, check the farm’s website or call ahead to find out what you should bring.
Some farms provide saws, while others may ask you to bring your own. Some offer assistance with cutting and transporting the tree, while others expect you to handle more of the process yourself.
It’s also worth checking:
- Whether reservations are required.
- Whether the farm accepts cash, cards, or both.
- Whether trees are priced by height, variety, or another method.
- Whether tree shaking, wrapping, or loading assistance is available.
- Whether children can safely walk through the farm’s designated areas.
- Whether pets are allowed.
Dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes or boots, and bring gloves if you’ll be handling branches or helping with the tree.

If you’re visiting with young children, plan for a little extra time. The goal is to enjoy the experience, not rush through it!
8. Transport Your Tree Home Safely
Once you’ve found your perfect tree, you’ll need to get it home safely.
Ask the farm about tree wrapping or netting if it’s available. A netted tree can be easier to handle and transport.
If you’re transporting the tree on your vehicle, make sure it’s secured properly using suitable straps and an appropriate roof rack or carrier. Follow your vehicle’s load limits and avoid relying on bungee cords alone. Make sure the tree can’t shift or obstruct your visibility while driving.
If you’re placing the tree inside your vehicle, protect the interior with a tarp or blanket and make sure the tree is secured.
Once you get home, bring the tree to its designated spot, make a fresh cut across the trunk if needed, and place it in a water-holding stand promptly.
Keep your tree away from fireplaces, heaters, candles, and other heat sources. Check the water level daily, and remove the tree when it becomes dry.

Final Thoughts: Make Finding Your Christmas Tree a Tradition
Picking out a Christmas tree at a farm is about so much more than finding the perfect evergreen.
It’s about spending time outside with your family, watching your kids get excited as they search for their favorite tree, and creating traditions you’ll look forward to year after year.
Remember to measure your space before you go, look for a fresh and healthy tree, consider its shape and variety, and find out what your chosen farm provides before arriving.
And don’t forget to enjoy the experience itself. Take your time, snap a few photos, and let the kids help choose the tree that will become part of your family’s Christmas memories.

The perfect Christmas tree isn’t necessarily the biggest or most symmetrical one. It’s the one that fits your home and brings your family together during one of the most wonderful times of the year.
Happy Christmas tree hunting!
