1. Floating Iridescent Bubble Balloons
One of my favorite decorations from our Wicked birthday party was the giant floating iridescent bubble balloons. We purchased a balloon kit that included several different sizes of clear iridescent balloons, which helped create a whimsical, magical look throughout the room.

Each balloon included a small attachment point that made it easy to thread fishing line through. We hung the balloons horizontally across the room at varying heights, creating the illusion that they were floating in midair. The effect was simple to achieve but made a huge impact on the overall atmosphere of the party.

The iridescent finish caught the light beautifully and reminded us of Glinda’s magical bubbles, making them a perfect fit for our Wicked theme. Guests immediately noticed them when they walked in, and they helped transform the party space into something that felt truly magical.
If you’re looking for a unique decoration that goes beyond a traditional balloon arch, floating bubble balloons are an easy way to create an immersive party experience that guests won’t forget.

2. DIY Wicked Balloon Arches
Balloon arches played a huge role in bringing our Wicked birthday party to life. Since my daughter loves Glinda and all things pink, we used several balloon arches throughout the party space to create a magical and cohesive look.
Our main entryway featured a pink balloon arch decorated with long flowing ribbons, which quickly became one of everyone’s favorite details. The ribbons added movement, texture, and a whimsical feel that made the entire display look extra special. Guests constantly commented on how pretty they were, and they helped create a grand entrance into the party.

Party Tip: Before buying new decorations, take a look around your house to see what you already have that might fit your theme. The pink velvet chair in this photo was already in our home, and it ended up being the perfect addition to our Glinda-inspired party setup. We also added a life-size cardboard cutout of my daughter, which became a fun photo prop and one of the cutest details of the entire celebration. Sometimes the best party decorations are the ones you already own!
We also incorporated additional balloon arches throughout the celebration, including an all-pink arch and a pink-and-green arch above the cake table to tie together the signature Wicked colors. Using multiple arches helped each area of the party feel connected while still giving every space its own unique look.

One of the things I loved most about using balloon arches was how much impact they made. They filled large spaces, created beautiful photo opportunities, and instantly made the party feel more polished and immersive. If you’re planning a Wicked birthday party, balloon arches are one of the best decorations you can add—and don’t be afraid to include fun details like ribbons to make them even more memorable.

3. Handmade Wicked Goodie Bags
One of my favorite details from our Wicked birthday party was the handmade goodie bags. I wanted them to feel special while still being simple and budget-friendly, so I created pink and green favor bags inspired by Glinda and Elphaba.

To personalize them, I designed and printed custom labels on sticker paper featuring the quote, “Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.” After printing the labels, I cut them out and attached them to the bags with coordinating pink and green ribbon. There are also tons of adorable Wicked-inspired favor tag templates available online if you don’t want to design your own.

Inside each bag, I included themed goodies in matching colors, including heart-shaped sunglasses, bubbles, a hair scrunchie, and a Ring Pop. Guests could choose either a pink or green bag when they arrived, which made it even more fun for the kids.
Before the party started, I displayed all of the favor bags on our entryway table. Not only did they make adorable party favors, but they also doubled as decorations and added another pop of color to the party setup. They were inexpensive to make, easy to customize, and looked much more elaborate than they actually were.

If you’re planning a Wicked birthday party, color-coordinated favor bags are a simple way to tie your theme together and send guests home with a fun keepsake.

4. Hand-Painted Wicked Birthday Banner
One of the biggest focal points of our Wicked birthday party was the custom hand-painted birthday banner. Large party signs can be expensive to order, so creating your own is a great way to add a personalized touch while staying within budget.
My favorite party-planning hack is using a projector. Simply project your design onto a roll of kraft paper, trace it with a pencil, and then fill it in with paint, markers, or paint pens. Even if you don’t consider yourself artistic, this technique makes it possible to create beautiful custom party decorations with surprisingly little effort.

For our party, I started with a large roll of kraft paper and used a projector to trace the lettering. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in painting, so I hand-painted the Glinda and Elphaba illustrations myself, but I still used the projector for the text because it saved a tremendous amount of time.

As a busy mom, most of my party prep happens after my kids go to bed. This banner took me about two evenings to complete, working a little at a time once the house was quiet. While the hand-painted character illustrations added extra time, I’ve created similar custom party banners in just an hour or two using a projector, traced designs, and paint markers.

The finished banner became one of the most photographed decorations at the party and helped tie the entire theme together. Whether you paint your design by hand, use paint markers, or simply trace and color it in, a custom banner is an affordable way to make a party feel extra special.

Since I had a little extra time while preparing for the party, I decided to create a second custom sign for our front entryway. This one featured a simple “Maddie Is 5” design with hand-painted pink bubbles inspired by Glinda’s bubble motif. It was a fun way to welcome guests as they arrived and helped carry the theme throughout the party from the moment they walked through the door.

5. A Pink and Green Wicked Color Scheme
One of the easiest ways to create a cohesive Wicked birthday party is to fully embrace the iconic pink and green color palette inspired by Glinda and Elphaba. In fact, one thing I wish I would have done differently was include a dress code on the invitation encouraging guests to wear pink or green. It would have been so much fun to see whether everyone showed up Team Glinda or Team Elphaba!
Since my daughter absolutely loves Glinda, we leaned heavily into pink throughout the party. Maddie wore a beautiful Glinda-inspired dress, and I joined in the fun with a cute pink jacket that fit the theme perfectly. My other daughter loves Elphaba, so she wore an adorable Elphaba-inspired outfit. Looking back, seeing guests choose pink or green would have been such a fun way to bring the theme to life even more.

We carried the pink and green color palette throughout the rest of the party as well. From the balloon arches and tablecloths to the goodie bags and dessert table, we incorporated both colors into nearly every detail. While pink definitely took center stage, the green accents helped tie everything back to the Wicked theme and created a cohesive look throughout the celebration.

The color scheme helped instantly connect all of the party elements and made the theme recognizable the moment guests arrived. Even simple decorations felt more intentional because everything worked together within the same color palette.

6. Create a Magical Wicked Dessert Table
One of my favorite areas of the party was our Wicked-themed dessert table. We used pink and green decorations, themed treats, and a coordinating balloon arch to create a fun focal point that tied the entire party together.
One of my favorite details was our Ferris wheel cupcake stand. We originally purchased it for my daughter’s Disneyland birthday party, and we’ve used it for several birthdays since. It adds height to the display, creates visual interest, and always gets compliments from guests.
For the birthday cake, we kept things simple and ordered a cake from Costco. Maddie spotted it and immediately fell in love with it, so it was an easy choice. Sometimes the best party decision is simply choosing the thing that makes your birthday child happiest.

Between the cake, cupcakes, balloon arch, and themed decorations, the dessert table became one of the most photographed spots at the party. You don’t need an elaborate dessert spread to create a memorable display—just a few themed treats and a fun way to showcase them.

7. Save Money with Homemade Wicked Cupcakes
While we purchased the birthday cake, I made all of the cupcakes myself. This is one of my favorite birthday party money-saving hacks because cupcakes are surprisingly easy to make and can save a significant amount compared to ordering custom bakery desserts.

For this party, we kept things simple with Funfetti cake mix, which is always a favorite in our house. Over the years, I’ve gotten much better at decorating cupcakes, and one of the biggest game changers has been using a piping kit. It takes a little practice—and it can definitely get messy—but it creates those beautiful swirled frosting designs that make homemade cupcakes look much more professional.

To tie them into the Wicked theme, we added themed cupcake toppers that instantly transformed simple cupcakes into party decorations. Sometimes it’s the little details that make the biggest impact.
As a busy mom, I don’t have time to make elaborate bakery-style desserts from scratch, so I love finding shortcuts that still look cute. Between the boxed cake mix, frosting, piping kit, and themed toppers, these cupcakes were easy, affordable, and a huge hit with the kids.
If you’re looking for a simple way to save money on party food, homemade cupcakes are one of my favorite birthday party hacks. They look adorable on a dessert table, cost far less than custom bakery cupcakes, and are surprisingly easy to make.

8. Plan Plenty of Fun Activities for the Kids
While I love decorating for birthday parties, I’ve learned that one of the biggest keys to a successful party is making sure the kids have plenty of opportunities to play.
For this party, we expected around 25 children, so we wanted to make sure there were enough activities to keep everyone entertained. We already owned a bounce house that the kids love, but because we were expecting such a large group, we rented a second one for the day. Having multiple places for the kids to jump, play, and burn off energy was definitely worth it.

In addition to the bounce houses, we also had our backyard playhouse and a climbing dome available for the kids. Both are always huge hits at birthday parties and gave the children even more ways to play throughout the celebration.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that kids don’t necessarily need elaborate party games to have fun. Sometimes the best activities are simply giving them space to run, climb, jump, and play together.
Looking back, I probably wouldn’t rent a second bounce house again. Between the cost of the rental and how often we host birthday parties, I could have purchased a second bounce house and used it for years to come. If your family hosts a lot of gatherings or birthday parties, buying one may actually be the more economical option in the long run.

✨ How I Plan My Parties
After years of planning birthday parties for my kids (and forgetting a few things along the way 😅), I’ve created a party planning system that helps me keep everything organized. From guest lists and shopping lists to gift tracking and a day-of schedule, it’s the exact system I use to plan every party you see on my blog.

9. Add Personalized Party Details
One of the cutest personalized details from our Wicked birthday party was the life-size cardboard cutout of Maddie that greeted guests as they arrived. It instantly became a conversation piece and helped make the party feel uniquely hers.

We also incorporated personalized signs throughout the celebration, including custom birthday banners and a hand-painted “Maddie Is 5” sign. These simple touches helped transform the party from a generic Wicked theme into a celebration centered around our daughter.

One of my favorite party-planning tips is to look for ways to incorporate your child’s name, photos, and interests into the decorations. Some of the most memorable details are often the most personal.
One of my all-time favorite examples of this was from my daughter’s Gabby’s Dollhouse birthday party. I used her actual dollhouse as part of the decor and filled it with tiny photos of Maddie from throughout the years. It was inexpensive, incredibly meaningful, and one of the most talked-about decorations at the party.

Whether it’s a life-size cutout, personalized sign, family photos, or a favorite toy turned into decor, adding personal touches helps make a birthday party feel truly special.

10. Bring the Magic to Life with a Character Visit
Without a doubt, one of the most magical parts of our Wicked birthday party was having Glinda make a special appearance. While it was definitely one of the more expensive elements of the party, it was also one of the most memorable.

The moment Glinda arrived, the kids lit up with excitement. Watching them interact with a character they recognized and loved brought the entire theme to life in a way that decorations alone never could. The balloon arches, banners, cupcakes, and decorations created a beautiful party atmosphere, but Glinda’s visit was what made the celebration feel truly magical.

As parents, we spend so much time planning every detail of a birthday party, hoping to create a special day for our children. Seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces as they met Glinda was one of those moments I’ll never forget. The children were completely captivated, and the parents loved watching the magic unfold through their kids’ eyes.

If your budget allows, I highly recommend considering a character visit for your party theme. Whether it’s a princess, a superhero, a favorite movie character, or another beloved figure, having someone step into that role can create memories that last far beyond the party itself.
We’ve actually hired character entertainers for several birthday parties over the years, and it has been one of the best investments we’ve made. Looking back, those character visits are some of the moments my children remember most.
Other Character Parties We’ve Loved
✨ Tangled Birthday Party

For our Tangled-themed birthday party, we invited Rapunzel to celebrate with the kids. Seeing their faces light up when Rapunzel arrived was absolutely priceless.
✨ Under the Sea Little Mermaid Party

A visit from Ariel helped bring our under-the-sea celebration to life and made the party feel truly magical.
✨ Taylor Swift Care Bear Party

For one of my daughter’s birthdays, we even had Taylor Swift make a special appearance at her Care Bear Birthday Party because she was completely obsessed with Taylor at the time. It was such a fun surprise and one of the highlights of the entire celebration.
If there’s one party splurge I consistently recommend, it’s investing in experiences that create lasting memories. Looking back, hiring Glinda for this party was worth every penny, and it’s a memory that will forever be ingrained in my mommy brain.

If you’re planning your own Wicked-themed celebration, remember that you don’t need to do all 10 of these ideas to create an unforgettable party. Choose the elements that fit your budget, space, and your child’s interests, and focus on the details that will mean the most to them.
Whether it’s a DIY balloon arch, themed desserts, personalized decorations, or a character visit, even a few thoughtful touches can transform an ordinary birthday into a celebration they’ll remember for years to come.
Most importantly, have fun with it. The best parties aren’t the perfect ones—they’re the ones filled with laughter, excitement, and special memories with the people you love most. 💖💚✨
