Our Rustic Hunting Nursery: A Cozy Baby Boy Room Tour

When we found out we were having a baby boy, we knew we wanted to create a space that reflected the things our family loves most—spending time outdoors, hunting season, and cozy days at home together.

Rather than creating an overly themed room, we wanted a nursery that felt warm, timeless, and rustic. We chose natural wood tones, earthy colors, wildlife-inspired decor, and a few meaningful hunting touches to create a space that could grow with our son over the years.

Our son is now 20 months old and still happily sleeping in this room, which makes me love it even more. It has transitioned beautifully from a newborn nursery into a toddler-friendly space, and many of the pieces we chose continue to work just as well today as they did when we first brought him home.

If you’re looking for rustic hunting nursery inspiration, I’m sharing all the details from our baby boy’s nursery and the practical updates we’ve made along the way.

The Overall Design

One of my favorite things about this nursery is how simple and timeless it feels. We wanted a room that reflected our family’s love of the outdoors without feeling overly themed.

The warm wood furniture, neutral walls, wildlife-inspired decor, and earthy colors all work together to create a cozy space that feels calm and welcoming. Even now that our son is 20 months old, I still love walking into this room.

We chose a beautiful solid wood crib that has now been used for all three of our children and continues to look just as beautiful today.

Hunting-Inspired Nursery Decor

When designing the nursery, we focused on a few meaningful pieces rather than filling the room with decorations.

The custom wooden name sign above the crib quickly became one of my favorite details. We paired it with wildlife artwork, a deer mount, and outdoor-inspired touches that tied the hunting theme together while still keeping the room soft and inviting for a baby.

Our Favorite Nursery Details

A few pieces really helped bring the room together.

The animal track rug added the perfect touch of outdoor inspiration while still feeling playful enough for a nursery. I also loved the woodland crib sheet, which brought in subtle wildlife details without overwhelming the space.

The oversized dresser gave us plenty of storage for clothes, diapers, blankets, and all the baby essentials. As any parent knows, you can never have too much storage!

The Crib Mattress We Chose

One thing that was especially important to me when putting together our son’s nursery was creating a safe sleep environment.

As a nurse, I’ve always paid close attention to safe sleep recommendations, so choosing a quality crib mattress was something I spent a lot of time researching before our son arrived.

After comparing several options, we chose the Newton Crib Mattress, and it’s a product we’ve used for all three of our children. One of the biggest reasons we chose it is its ultra-breathable design. The mattress is made from a unique breathable material that allows airflow throughout the mattress, which gave me additional peace of mind during those early baby months.

Another feature I love is that the mattress is completely washable. The cover can be removed and washed, and the core can be rinsed clean, which is incredibly helpful when you’re dealing with the messes that inevitably come with babies and toddlers.

Our son is now 20 months old and still sleeps on the same mattress today. It has held up beautifully through the newborn, infant, and toddler stages, and it’s one of the few nursery purchases that I would buy again without hesitation.

Of course, every family will choose products that work best for their needs, but if you’re researching nursery mattresses, the Newton mattress is one that has worked extremely well for our family.

One Change We Made Later: Blackout Curtains

One thing we quickly learned once our son started sleeping in his nursery around six months old was that the room needed blackout curtains.

The large windows bring in beautiful natural light during the day, but they also let in a lot of light during naps and early mornings. Once he started sleeping in his own room, we knew we needed a solution.

We found dark hunter green blackout curtains on Amazon, and they ended up being one of the best additions to the nursery. Not only did they help darken the room for naps and bedtime, but they also fit perfectly with the rustic hunting theme.

The deep green color blended beautifully with the earthy tones throughout the room and made the space feel even cozier. Looking back, I wish we had added them sooner.

A Nursery That Has Grown With Him

One thing I appreciate most about this room is how well it has grown with our son.

When I look at the photo of him swaddled up in his crib as a newborn, it’s hard to believe he’s now 20 months old. Even though he’s no longer a tiny baby, the room still works perfectly for this stage of life.

Because we chose timeless furniture and a neutral design, the nursery has transitioned naturally from a newborn space into a toddler room without needing major changes.

One of my favorite things about this nursery is how well it has grown with our son. The hunting and outdoor theme didn’t stop at the nursery stage either.

When he turned one, we carried the same outdoor-inspired theme into his birthday celebration with a duck hunting-themed first birthday party.
