Kelly’s Tailgate: 70 years of wins
When it came time to celebrate my dad turning 70, I knew the theme had to be something meaningful to him. My dad graduated from law school at the University of Oregon and has been a lifelong Ducks fan ever since. Growing up, some of my favorite memories were spending fall Saturdays together at Autzen Stadium cheering on the Ducks with our season tickets. Those games became such a special tradition for our family. So when we planned his birthday party, it only felt right to bring a little bit of that Duck spirit to the celebration! In this post, I’m sharing how we created a fun University of Oregon–inspired 70th birthday party to celebrate an incredible dad, devoted Ducks fan, and a lawyer who has spent his career helping so many people.

A couple of my dad’s siblings and his niece even flew in from Minnesota, and we were able to completely surprise him! Seeing his reaction when they walked in made the celebration even more special.

Football Decorations for the Ultimate Tailgate Party
For the decor, I wanted the party to feel like a fun game day tailgate. We created a festive focal point with a green and yellow balloon arch that brought in the Oregon Ducks colors and made the space feel instantly celebratory. I also added a custom “Kelly’s Tailgate” sign to tie into the football theme and make the setup feel like an official tailgate party. Above the cake table, we hung a “Happy Birthday” banner over a large print of Autzen Stadium, which felt like the perfect tribute to all the memories our family has cheering on the Ducks together. It ended up being such a fun way to combine his love for Oregon football with celebrating his big milestone birthday.
If you’re planning a similar party, I linked the decorations and supplies we used throughout this post to make it easy to recreate.

Custom sign: “Kelly’s Tailgate” sign: I designed this on Canva and then I emailed it to the local UPS store and they printed it out for me! It was 2 ft by 4 ft.
I made the balloon arches myself using an inexpensive balloon arch kit from Amazon. It came with the balloon strip and different balloon sizes so it was really easy to assemble.
I just inflated the balloons, inserted them into the strip, and attached the arch to the wall with command hooks. It took about an hour but made such a big impact for the party decor!
If you want to recreate this football tailgate party setup, here are the decorations I used.

Inexpensive Green & yellow balloon arch kit (I used two of these, one for the entryway and one for the cake table)
Balloon pump (I used this one to inflate the balloons)
70 LED light up numbers (I used this one)

Game Day Party Attire
To really lean into the tailgate theme, we asked everyone to come dressed in their favorite game day gear. Most guests wore Oregon Ducks apparel or stuck to green and yellow to match the team colors. We also had a few people representing NDSU, where my dad went to undergrad, which made it even more special. It was so fun seeing everyone show up in their team gear and it instantly made the whole party feel like a real tailgate celebration.

If you’re planning your own football-themed party, here are a few fun Oregon-inspired game day pieces that would be perfect for a tailgate celebration.

70th Birthday Memory Corner
One of the most meaningful parts of the party was the memory corner. I gathered old photos of my dad from throughout his life—pictures from his childhood, his years serving in the Marine Corps, and some of my favorites of him as a young dad. To display them, I used a large gold frame and stapled string across the back to create simple lines for hanging the photos. Then I clipped the pictures onto the string with mini clothespins. It turned into such a special visual timeline of his life, and guests loved stopping by to look through the memories and share stories. I even found my dad’s old law school commencement brochure to add to the display table.

Food – “Kelly’s Tailgate”
No game day celebration is complete without classic tailgate food! To keep with the Oregon Ducks theme, we served all the stadium favorites — burgers, hot dogs, hot wings, chips and dip, and a veggie tray. It felt just like the kind of food you’d grab before a big game at Autzen Stadium. For the snacks and finger foods, I used an awesome stadium-style snack bowl from Amazon that made organizing everything super easy while also adding a fun football touch to the table. It was the perfect way to keep everything looking festive and easy for guests to grab while mingling.

Special Dessert for the MVP
For dessert, we kept things simple and crowd-friendly with bundt cakes. They were easy to serve and perfect for a tailgate-style party. We also made sure to include gluten-free options so our family members with celiac disease could enjoy dessert too. Having both regular and gluten-free bundt cakes made it easy for everyone to grab a slice and celebrate together.

Celebrating my dad’s 70th birthday with a football tailgate party was such a special day for our whole family. From the tailgate food and fun decorations to the memory corner filled with photos from throughout his life, every detail helped make the celebration feel personal and meaningful. Having family fly in to surprise him made it even more unforgettable. It was the perfect way to celebrate such an incredible milestone and honor someone who means so much to all of us. If you’re planning a birthday party for a football fan or looking for a fun way to celebrate a big milestone, a tailgate-themed party is such a fun and memorable idea.

Thank you to everyone who came to the party to make sure my Dad felt loved! He said it was his best birthday he’s ever had! 💚💛
