What I Keep in My Car as a Busy Mom of 3 (So I’m Ready for Anything)

If you’ve ever opened your car door and thought, “How did we end up living out of this vehicle?” — hi, same. 🙋🏼‍♀️

I’m a mom of three, a registered nurse working long shifts, and basically the family chauffeur. Between school drop-offs, sports, errands, last-minute Target runs, and hauling extra friends around… my car has to be ready for anything.

And here’s the part that makes this even sweeter:

I drive a 2023 Toyota Sequoia — and I worked overtime shifts for an entire year to save up for it.

When Toyota announced they were redesigning the Sequoia, I decided I wanted one. So I picked up extra shifts, saved aggressively, and made it happen. Putting down that big down payment felt SO good. It wasn’t just a car — it was something I worked hard for.

It seats 8 people (which is perfect because somehow we always have extra kids with us), and it’s officially our family “rig.”

So today I’m sharing exactly what I keep in my car at all times — because being prepared = less stress.

Before I get into the snacks and emergency bins, let me show you the car seat setup that makes 3 kids in a 2023 Sequoia actually functional.

1. The Car Seats That Make 3 Across Work in My Sequoia

Graco 4Ever DLX 4-in-1 Car Seat

We use this for our youngest. It grows with them, feels sturdy, and has held up through real-life mom chaos (snacks, spills, all of it). I love not having to rebuy seats at every stage.

Diono Radian 3R, 3-in-1 Convertible Car Seat, Rear Facing & Forward Facing

This is the reason 3 car seats across the middle row works for us.

They’re narrow — which is EVERYTHING when you’re trying to fit multiple seats in one row.

If we want to fully use the third row, we’ll put one child in the back and two in the middle — and we can still move between rows easily. That flexibility was huge for us when choosing seats.

Because the Dionos are so narrow, we can still flip one of the second-row seats forward to access the third row — without uninstalling car seats.

When We Switched to a Booster — Easy & Space-Saving

We moved our 6-year-old into a backless booster to make our car configuration even easier. Our exact booster (a slim Diono Connect3 RXT) isn’t available right now, but the whole idea was choosing a seat with a smaller footprint so we could keep access to the third row and still fit seats across the middle row.

Here are a few slim, 3-across friendly booster seats that work well in SUVs like ours:

Graco TurboBooster LX Backless Booster with Affix Latch— great for narrow spaces

Diono Solana, No Latch, Single Backless Booster Car Seat— comfy and budget-friendly

2. Emergency Mom Kit (Non-Negotiable)

As a nurse, I physically cannot drive around unprepared 😂. Someone is always bleeding, hungry, or sticky. My center console is always prepared and within arms length so that I can be ready for anything!

Inside:

Travel first aid kit: This compact first aid kit fits in my center console and has already saved us twice at soccer practice.

Hand sanitizer: this brand is THE best! And I use A LOT of hand sanitizer as a hospital nurse!

Wipes (always wipes)

Disinfectant wipes: these are also a must to keep the car clean, especially if you let your kids snack in your car.

Tissues: these ones are also so cute and are always a hit with any passengers in my car

Chapstick: THE best chapstick and since it comes in a larger size it keeps me from losing them.

Hair ties: I like these ones

Water bottle: a must have for any car ride.

3. Snack Stash (Because Hangry Kids Are Not It)

I keep a rotating stash of:

Granola bars

Applesauce pouches

Trail mix

Crackers

Electrolyte drink packets

Pro tip: keep non-melty, non-crumby options when possible. Learn from my mistakes.

And This Is What Holds It All Together

Snacks are great… but if they’re just rolling around on the floor of your car?

Absolute chaos. 😅

So I added a simple backseat organizer (we love this one) to create what I call our “kid zone.”

It hangs behind the front seat and holds:

Snack pouches, Water bottles, Books, Headphones, Wipes, Random little treasures they insist on bringing everywhere.

When everything has a pocket, it stops becoming my problem while I’m driving.

The best part? The kids can reach what they need without yelling, “MOMMMM!” every five minutes.

With three kids (and usually at least one extra friend), that organization system makes a huge difference.

And since my Toyota Sequoia seats eight, the backseat can get busy fast — so having a contained space for their stuff keeps the whole car from feeling chaotic.

4. Extra Clothes for the Little One

There is nothing worse than:

Mud puddles, Spilled juice, Potty accidents, Playground water features you didn’t know were turned on😅

I keep:

Leggings

T-shirt

Sweatshirt

Underwear

Socks

All packed in a gallon zip bag so dirty clothes can go right back in.

5. Sports & Activity Bin

Because we never go straight home.

Ours usually has:

A soccer ball

Blanket

Small folding chair

Sunscreen

Hats

Bogg bag: to hold it all.

My Sequoia’s cargo space makes it easy to keep this organized without it taking over the whole trunk.

6. “Just in Case” Comfort Items

Lightweight stroller

Phone charger (multiple): I love this one, and it comes in fun colors!

Portable Anker Phone Charger: I like this one.

Garbage bag for messy clothes

Emergency $20 bill (hidden 😅)

7. Mom Survival Extras

These are more for me:

Protein bars for long days:

Pura Car Diffuser: THIS makes my car smell AMAZING! My favorite scent is Fraiser Fir 🌲

Gum: I like this teeth whitening brand.

Sunglasses: I love a good pair of aviators 😎

If you’re juggling kids and working shifts like I am, sometimes your car is your reset space between life transitions.

8. The Sanity Saver: A Dedicated Car Trash System

Let’s just call this what it is.

The most essential item in my car?

A garbage bag. 🙃

Not glamorous. Not aesthetic. But absolutely life-saving.

With three kids, my car can go from “clean and peaceful” to “snack explosion aftermath” in approximately 7 minutes.

Wrappers.

Juice pouches.

Granola bar crumbs.

Mystery sticky things.

So I keep a small trash bag in my car at all times. Sometimes it’s:

A small hanging car trash can

A grocery bag tied to the back of a seat

Or a lined bin tucked behind the center console

The key is that it’s reachable.

Because if kids can’t easily throw something away, it will 100% end up on the floor.

Why This Saves My Sanity

✔ Keeps the floor clear

✔ Makes weekly clean-outs fast

✔ Teaches kids responsibility

✔ Prevents the “what is that smell?” moment

It sounds so simple — but this one thing keeps my car from feeling chaotic.

And since my Toyota Sequoia is something I worked SO hard for, I’m not about to let it get destroyed by fruit snack wrappers.

Hard-earned SUV = protected at all costs. 😅

Final Thoughts From a Mom Who’s Always On the Go

At the end of the day, my car isn’t just a vehicle.

It’s:

The school drop-off line. The post-soccer snack station. The quiet place between a long nursing shift and walking back into mom mode. The place where extra kids pile in and memories get made.

My Toyota Sequoia isn’t just something I drive — it’s something I worked hard for. A year of overtime shifts. A goal I set. A reminder that hard work pays off.

And keeping it stocked and ready?

That’s just one small way I make our busy life run a little smoother.

If you’re a mom juggling a million things, here’s your reminder:

You don’t need perfection.

You just need systems that work for your family.

For me?

It’s snacks.

Backup clothes.

A first aid kit.

And yes… a garbage bag. 😅

Because when the car is ready, I feel ready.

And that makes all the difference.
